Perspective: That’s One Way to Look at it

The way we see things makes a huge difference in our lives.   Is the glass half full or half empty?  In reality both of these things are true and how you look at it makes all the difference.  Recognizing if you naturally go to that place of half full or half empty is the first step in realizing that you have a choice in how you see things.   We are all “in a perspective” about everything in our lives.  Whatever the situation is will remain the same, but how you are viewing it will have tremendous power in how you experience it.

If you are going on a first date, to a meeting, or even on vacation, but you are not looking forward to it, you are in a perspective.  So if you are going on a first date and “not looking forward” to it, what are some other ways to see it that also have truth?  The important thing at this stage is not in choosing “the one,” but simply realizing that there are multiple ways to see the same thing that also are true. Is there part of you that could enjoy the anticipation of the event? Is there a perspective that is humorous or ridiculous?  Quite often if we’ve had a bad experience once or even a few times we will turn this into the way IT is and always will be.  We forget how much power we actually have in shaping each and every situation we are in.  So, don’t get caught in the trap of thinking that is just the way it is because that is how it has always has been.  Find other perspectives that also have truth and expand your range of what is possible!

Look at the following examples and notice your perspective:

Spending time with family is always…
Having children after 40 is…
Flying on an airplane is…

Notice how you may want to prove these statements as true or false and then notice some other ways to answer them that are also true for you.  When you begin to practice seeing the same circumstances from different points of view, you are empowered by the ability to choose.  It’s not about always choosing what others might think is the “ideal” perspective, rather about letting go of “the one truth” and expanding how you can respond based on what else is true for you.  It seems rather simple, but recognizing that there are many ways to look at the same thing is vital to our quality of life.

From the Editor:

As the birth of our daughter quickly approaches I have had plenty of room for perspective work.  The biggest thing I’ve been confronted with lately is that Katherine “Katie” Grace has been breech since week 28.  Now that I’m 38 weeks along she is still showing no signs of going head down so I am scheduled for a C-section.  My initial thoughts and feelings were that of disappointment and sadness.  I quickly processed through that and made a decision to be grateful and happy that technology could tell me so far in advance how she is positioned, that she is growing healthy and to be able to plan for the safest arrival of our little blessing.  Expanding my perspective on the possibility of C-section has allowed these last weeks to still be filled with joy, hope and positive anticipation.  I am also still holding onto the possibility that she will flip!!

Also, we recently went on a tour of the maternity ward at the hospital where Katie will be born.  There is a brand new maternity wing with huge beautiful rooms that look more like a nice hotel than a hospital.  They even have a jacuzzi and pictures that slide up and down to hide some of the instruments - very high tech.  On the tour we were told that all C-section births recover in the old maternity wing of the hospital in the small, sterile, typical looking hospital rooms. Again I felt a wave of sadness, disappointment and even injustice!   The least they could do is give people that have to have C-sections and stay in the hospital longer better rooms, right?!  So, I saw where my mind immediately went and looked at all the other things I could focus on and got myself back to that place of gratitude again.

Coming Next Month: The Power of Choice

Understanding perspectives and identifying options is the place where we we must start to determine an appropriate course of action. We then must make a choice about how to proceed and what change if any is needed.  Next month, we'll look at the power of choice.  What does it mean to be intentional about our choices 100% of the time?   What does it take to get conscious of our choices?
